Epacris barbata is a compact shrub with sturdy stems and firm, lance-shaped leaves with a slightly prickly texture. In spring, it carries small white tubular flowers clustered near the branch tips, creating a neat, bright display. Its naturally tidy shape and fine texture suit feature planting, containers, rockeries or mixed beds, while the prickly foliage provides valuable refuge and nesting sites for small birds.
Endemic to Tasmania’s Freycinet Peninsula and Schouten Island, it grows in open heath and woodland on well-drained, sandy or granite-based soils. Plant in full sun to part shade with sharp drainage and consistent moisture, avoiding waterlogged conditions. Light pruning after flowering helps maintain a compact form, and established plants tolerate cool climates and light frost.
