Botanical Name

Allocasuarina paludosa

Common Name

Swamp She-oak

Description

Swamp She-oak is a distinctive native tree perfectly adapted for wet conditions and challenging sites. This hardy species features fine, needle-like branchlets that create an attractive weeping appearance, while the characteristic woody cone fruits add textural interest year-round. Extremely valuable for erosion control and wetland restoration, this adaptable tree thrives in waterlogged soils where other species fail. The nitrogen-fixing root system improves soil quality, making it an excellent pioneer species for rehabilitation projects. Birds love the seeds from the cones, while the dense foliage provides excellent nesting sites. Its tolerance for salt spray and wet conditions makes it ideal for coastal swales and drainage areas in suburban developments.
