Botanical Name

Alyxia buxifolia

Common Name

Sea Box

Description

Sea Box is a versatile native shrub prized for its glossy, box-like foliage and sweet-scented flowers. This hardy coastal species produces small, waxy white flowers that release a delightful fragrance, particularly in the evening, attracting moths and other nocturnal pollinators. The dense, compact growth habit and attractive evergreen leaves make it excellent for formal hedging, screening, or as a feature shrub in coastal gardens. Extremely salt tolerant and wind resistant, it thrives in challenging seaside conditions where many other plants fail. The small orange berries that follow the flowers provide food for native birds, while the dense foliage offers excellent nesting sites. Its tolerance for regular pruning makes it ideal for maintaining neat, formal shapes.
