Botanical Name

Doryanthes excelsa

Common Name

Gymea Lily

Description

Renowned for its towering red flower spike and dramatic architectural form, this magnificent species forms a bold, upright clump of long, arching, strap-like leaves. The foliage typically reaches 1–2 m tall and wide, while mature plants produce a massive flowering stem rising up to 5 m tall, topped with clusters of bright red tubular flowers in late spring to early summer. The flowers are followed by decorative seed heads that add interest well beyond the flowering period. Ideal as a striking feature plant in large gardens and open landscapes.

Habitat

Occurs naturally on rocky slopes and sandstone ridges in coastal and tableland regions of eastern New South Wales, where soils are free-draining and low in nutrients. Performs best in full sun to light shade in well-drained soil, with occasional deep watering during establishment and dry periods. Tolerant of heat and moderate frost once established, and generally low maintenance with minimal pruning required. Avoid rich fertilisers and heavy soils to maintain strong growth and flowering.

Cultural SIgnificance

Traditionally valued by Aboriginal peoples of the Sydney region, with the Gymea Lily being an important cultural symbol and the nectar-rich flowers providing food sources, while the dramatic flowering served as a seasonal indicator in traditional landscapes.
