Leionema ambiens is native to the northern Tablelands of New South Wales and south-eastern Queensland, where it grows on sandstone escarpments and in open forest on well-drained soils. It performs best in a partial sun to lightly shaded position with good drainage. Once established it is reasonably drought tolerant and responds well to occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.
