Eucalyptus viridis is a small to medium mallee eucalypt, typically forming a dense, multi-stemmed shrub from a lignotuber. The narrow, lance-shaped leaves are a fresh, vibrant green, giving the plant a soft, fine-textured appearance in the garden.
Clusters of creamy white flowers appear in spring and summer, followed by woody, cup-shaped seed capsules. Its compact, bushy habit makes it an excellent choice for feature planting, screening, or hedging.
Eucalyptus viridis occurs naturally across inland eastern Australia, often on plains and gently sloping areas with well-drained sandy or loamy soils.
In the garden, it thrives in full sun and adapts to a range of soil types. It is drought tolerant once established and handles light frost, making it well suited to Melbourne conditions. Minimal pruning is required beyond early shaping, and low-phosphorus fertiliser should be used sparingly to maintain healthy growth.
