Gahnia sieberiana is a robust, clump-forming sedge with long, arching, strap-like leaves that are coarse and often sharply edged. It forms dense tussocks and produces tall flowering stems bearing branched clusters of small brown flower spikelets, followed by glossy dark seeds that add subtle visual interest. Its bold foliage provides strong structure in the landscape.
Native to eastern Australia, Gahnia sieberiana commonly grows in moist environments such as wetlands, creek margins, and damp forest understories. It prefers fertile, well-drained to seasonally wet soils and thrives in full sun to partial shade, tolerating periodic inundation as well as drier conditions once established.
